AVPrep Downloads
Two tools for Windows, both free and both portable. Unzip the folder and run the program. Nothing is installed, nothing is written to your registry, and your settings, presets and autosaves live in a data folder beside the executable. Copy that folder to a memory stick or another machine and it runs there with everything intact.
Neither one has an account, a login, a subscription, or a network connection. Your footage never leaves your computer.
AVPrep3
A timeline editor. Clips sit on tracks, you arrange them in time, and what you see in the preview is what comes out of the export. Built for the kind of work that has a voice, a music bed under it, some B roll and a title, and that has to end up on a phone screen.
- Multiple video and audio tracks, with clips that can be trimmed, split, moved and layered
- Real time preview with no encoder running, so playback does not stutter while you work
- Crossfades and the other transitions, applied at a join without moving anything
- Titles and captions on their own track, with title and action safe areas drawn over the preview
- Per clip audio: gain, EQ, denoise, fades, and ducking that lowers a music bed under speech
- Platform presets for vertical and landscape targets, with the loudness target built in
- Export in three passes: normalise each clip, composite, then mix and encode
- Rolling autosaves and a project file that keeps your edit decisions rather than your media
- 15 help articles, on the site and offline inside the program folder

AVPrep2
A preparation and conversion tool. It is not a timeline editor and does not pretend to be one. What it does is take a pile of files and get them into shape, in batches, without you sitting there clicking through one at a time.
- Clip a section out of audio or video by in and out points, frame by frame
- Combine several clips into one file, with crossfades that straddle the joins
- Convert between formats, with presets you can save and reuse
- Composite segments together, keeping or dropping each segment's own audio
- Build a video from photographs and a soundtrack, with even or manual timing
- Captions with word wrap at 42 characters, exported burned in or as a file
- Waveform view with snapping to zero crossings, so cuts do not click
- A job queue that runs work in the background while you set up the next one
- 17 help articles, on the site and offline inside the program folder

Before you download
Windows will warn you
Neither program is code signed, because a certificate costs several hundred dollars
a year and these are free tools. Windows SmartScreen will show a blue box saying it
protected your PC. The file is what it says it is, and the SHA-256 above lets you
prove that if you want to: run
certutil -hashfile AVPrep3-portable-0.1.0.zip SHA256 in a command prompt
and compare.
Unblock the zip first
Windows marks files downloaded from the internet, and that mark spreads to everything you extract. Right click the zip, choose Properties, tick Unblock at the bottom, then extract. Doing it afterwards means doing it on several hundred files.
Where to put it
Anywhere you can write to. A folder on your desktop is fine. Program Files is a bad choice, because the program wants to write its data folder next to itself and Windows will not let it.
Uninstalling
Delete the folder. That is all of it.
What is inside the zip
The program, the Electron runtime it needs, a bundled copy of ffmpeg, and
docs\AV-Reference.html, which is the offline copy of the
glossary and the
craft chapters. That is why the download is large. Nothing
is fetched at runtime.
Licence and warranty
Free to use, including commercially. No warranty of any kind. Keep your own backups of anything you care about, which is true of every editor and not just this one.
