How a search works

State and How recent
The state is added to every search, and the time window drops anything older. Choose "United States" for national news. Official alerts (weather, fires, FEMA, Federal Register, SEC) ignore the window where noted, because an alert is still news while it is active.
Your own searches
One search per line. Quotes, OR and a minus sign work. "Add the selected state" appends the state to each line; "Search exactly as I typed it" does not. Saved searches stay in this browser only.
Local places
A comma list of towns. The "Local places" preloaded search looks for any of them. Idaho starts with the Magic Valley; other states start blank.
Duplicates
The same story from many outlets is merged into one line with an "Also reported by" list. Matching is by the headline's key words and by web address, with no AI.
Skip the 5 minute cache
Searches are remembered for five minutes so a repeat is fast and polite to the sources. Tick this to force fresh results.

Search engines

Google News
Google's news search. Broadest coverage. Links are Google redirects until you pick a story, then the real publisher address is looked up.
Bing News
Microsoft's news search. Overlaps Google but often finds different local outlets.

OSINT (watchdog and social)

Watchdog terms
Re-runs each search with words like lawsuit, complaint, violation, investigation, audit, ethics, misconduct, fraud, whistleblower and records request.
Reddit
New posts from the state's subreddit that match each search.
Bluesky
Recent public Bluesky posts that match each search.
Substack
Substack newsletters found through Google that match each search.

Social posts are rumor until confirmed. They are shown with a tinted background and can be hidden with "Hide social posts".

More sources

Official alerts and emergencies
National Weather Service alerts
Active watches and warnings (red flag, winter storm, flood, high wind, heat) for the selected state, straight from the National Weather Service. For "United States" only the severe and extreme ones are shown. These always show, whatever the time window.
USGS earthquakes
Earthquakes of magnitude 2.5 or more in and just around the selected state during your time window (3.5 or more for "United States").
NIFC wildfires and prescribed burns
Fires reported to the National Interagency Fire Center that were updated in the last 14 days, with acres and percent contained. For "United States" only fires of 1,000 acres or more.
FEMA disaster declarations
Federal disaster declarations for the state in the last 90 days, one line per disaster.
Idaho outlets and broadcasters
Idaho news outlets only (Idaho only)
Runs your searches again limited to Idaho Capital Sun, Idaho Statesman, Times-News (Magic Valley), Idaho Press, East Idaho News, Idaho Education News, Boise State Public Radio, Idaho Public Television (Idaho Reports), Idaho Business Review, Post Register and Lewiston Tribune.
Local TV and radio (Idaho only)
Runs your searches again limited to KMVT, KPVI, KTVB, KIVI, KBOI, Local News 8 and KLIX.
Government and agencies
Governor, Attorney General and Legislature
Runs your searches again limited to official Idaho state sites (governor, attorney general, legislature, secretary of state, water resources, environmental quality). Other states: any .gov site with press-release wording.
Federal Register (needs a state)
Federal rules and notices whose full text mentions the selected state (public land, water, energy, grants). Many only mention it in passing, so expect some noise. Needs a state, so it does nothing for "United States". Shows at least the last 7 days.
Energy, utilities and data centers
FERC, EIA, Idaho PUC, INL, Idaho Power
Runs your searches again limited to energy regulators and utilities: FERC, EIA, the Idaho Public Utilities Commission, Idaho National Laboratory, Idaho Power and Rocky Mountain Power. Other states: FERC, EIA and the Department of Energy.
American Nuclear Society (ans.org)
Runs your searches again limited to ans.org, the American Nuclear Society, including its Nuclear Newswire: nuclear power, small modular reactors, fuel, the Idaho National Laboratory and nuclear policy.
Utility Dive
Runs your searches again limited to Utility Dive (utilitydive.com), a trade news site on electric utilities, transmission and grid projects, data center power demand and energy regulation. It covers the whole country, so it helps most when your search names a state, a project or a company.
SEC filings (EDGAR) (needs a state)
Company filings (10-K, 8-K and exhibits) from the last 30 days that mention both the selected state and "data center". Good for spotting a company quietly planning a project. Needs a state.
Press wires
Company press releases (PR Newswire, Business Wire, GlobeNewswire) that match your searches. These are announcements written by the company, not reporting.
Local meetings and places
Meeting agendas and public notices
Adds one search for agendas, public hearings, public notices, planning and zoning, city council and county commissioners for your local places (or the whole state if the places box is empty).
One search for each local place
Adds a separate search for every place in the Local places box (up to 8), so a small town is not drowned out by a big one.

More engines
GDELT global news index
A free research index of news from thousands of outlets worldwide. Finds stories Google and Bing miss. It allows one request every five seconds, so it runs your first search only and can occasionally say "busy".
Mastodon hashtag
Recent public Mastodon posts tagged with the state name (for example #Idaho). Many are cross-posts from Bluesky. Treat as social chatter, not news.

Not included: paid news services and anything that needs a key or an account. Idaho 511 road conditions needs a developer key, so the Emergencies and incidents search and the NWS alerts cover road closures instead.

Picking stories

The check box on each story
Marks the story for copying. "Copy headlines and links" and "Download .txt" give the headline, outlet, time and the real publisher link. No AI.
