馃挼 The Dark Money Game

Campaign Finance Course Journal Tools
You are the compliance desk. Each round puts ten money moves in front of you: checks, loans, mailers, PACs, nonprofits, LLCs and party ads, in Idaho and federal races. Call each one. Is it legal and reported right, a reporting violation, a prohibited gift, or legal money whose source the report does not show? After each call you get the rule, where it is written, the usual screwup and the fix.
Every person and group in the scenarios is invented. Each answer links to the lesson in the PAC course that teaches the rule. Your best scores are saved in this browser.

How to play The Dark Money Game

  1. Pick a level. Levels 1 to 5 run from easy to hard. Each round draws 10 scenarios at random from that level's pool of 12.
  2. Read the situation and pick one answer. Some scenarios ask what the money move is; others ask for the best fix.
  3. After each answer you see the rule, its citation, the common screwup and the fix, with a link to the lesson.
  4. At the end of a round, open "Review the rules" to see every rule from that round in one list.
  5. Level 6, Legal Terms, is a bonus round of definitions. It unlocks when you finish level 5, or you can skip ahead and unlock it now.
  6. One point per correct answer. Your best score for each level is saved in this browser.

Idaho rules cover state, legislative, judicial and local races and ballot measures. Federal rules cover Congress and president. Each scenario says which kind of race it is.
